Mother: The most beautiful word on the lips of mankind

My own mother is the single most important role model for me; she has been my rock and my saviour. Sometimes we do not see eye to eye and I know that I have given her tons of grief in my wild young days, however she still loves me and respects me for who I am. She is the perfect role model for me as a mother.

She is the only person I turn to when I am having problems with my boys, she is firmly supportive and always assures me that I must not worry because, "That too will pass." Mother's Day has become a day to recognise those special women who have nurtured our development and shaped who we are today.

The annual celebration began almost 140 years ago as something altogether different. One woman, Julia Ward Howe, who had witnessed the hardships of war and fear that so many women were suffering through, rallied women in a cry for peace with her Mother's Day Proclamation.

Today, like so many of our holidays, the commercialization of Mother's Day has somewhat shifted from its original intentions. However, it still carries with it a very personalised and celebratory power.

As I celebrate mothers on this Mother's Day, I am reminded of how fortunate those of us who still have our mother's support are.

But for those who have lost their mothers or those who live far away from their mothers there needs to be a system of support, a sisterhood of women.

The importance of our global commitment to mothers in need, as well as their family's is crucial - we must remember that as a worldwide community, we can help provide the support they deserve.

For me, being a mother goes well beyond creature comforts and extends to a greater sisterhood in which we share the common role as mother.

Mothers are God's gift to humans, so that they could be raised in a manner to achieve greatness. Hence, the occasion of mother's day is a day extraordinaire for all of us.

It's a time to love, kiss and thank the most precious person in your life - your Mom! Through our lives, we find solace in putting our heads in the laps of our mothers, irrespective of our age, status, position and standing.

It is true that for her, we always remain the flesh of her flesh and the bone of her bone. So, this is the day to go visit her, spend time with her, hold her hands and reassure her of our love and care.

12 May is the day to pay tribute to the greatest, but the humblest figure you will know in a lifetime, your MUM.

Join me as I celebrate mothers around the world with the hope that soon every mother will be honoured with that basic human right of being able to give new life, while ensuring both her safety and the safety of her family.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers!
