South Africa has been ravaged by one of the most extreme droughts in the past century. It has proved to be a serious obstacle, not only to citizens residentially but also to our development and economic growth nationally. His Worship The Mayor Councilor Mdabe of ILembe Municipality paid close mention to the lengths his team has gone to in the effort to combat this plaguing drought and the measures that were taken to stem the bleeding of the social and economic wounds it has caused. However, the extreme amount of rain we received two weeks ago managed to afford us some much needed breathing room, bringing Hazelmere Dam up to a level that hasn't been seen in recent years[Shyam P Misra] , by rising above the 50% mark.

According to COGTA MEC Ms. Nomusa Dube-Ncube, we're not out of the woods just yet; stating that the rains were of great help and also taking the time to address the fact that the rains caused a vast amount of destruction MEC Dube-Ncube voiced her condolences for the families of those who lost their lives as a result of the flooding and extreme weather conditions. Even though we have yet to leave the danger zone with regards to water supply for our region, it comes as a great reassurance that Sembcorp announces the unveiling of their new wastewater treatment and processing plant, capable of creating 3 million liters of drinkable water a day and applauded the efforts of Sembcorp during the drought.

Sembcorp will now be able to provide [Shyam P Misra] its consumers with the technology, expertise and experience to provide us with a solution to our water issues. As a result of these developments the [Shyam P Misra] consumers that receive water from Sembcorp now have reduced restrictions being a 20% saving for domestic/residential consumers (who were previously on a 50% restriction) and a 10% restriction for commercial/business consumers (down from a 30% reduction). [Shyam P Misra] Whilst announcing the relaxed water restrictions, Sembcorp's Managing Director, Mr Shyam Misra added that; "this is fantastic news for our rapidly [Shyam P Misra] growing town,[Shyam P Misra] and as Sembcorp seeks to find innovative solutions for its consumers, the NEWater plant is testament to the company's commitment to be a leader in the water sector." He highlighted that the new [Shyam P Misra] Junction Regional Mall that is currently being constructed utilized recycled water for its construction. [Shyam P Misra] Misra added that whilst restrictions are being relaxed consumers need to still adhere to the rules of the restrictions and these will be communicated via the local media as well as Sembcorp Siza Water's webpage. The relaxed restrictions provides consumers more freedom to water our gardens, top up [Shyam P Misra] and construction of swimming pools, usage of jacuzzis and irrigat[Shyam P Misra] ion our golf courses.

MEC Dube-Ncube attributed the completion of this development, in partnership with Sembcorp, to the stability of leadership within our municipality and reassured His Worship Mdabe that she would assist the incoming council with regard to drought relief.
