Through my eyes

Our lives these days are so multifaceted and revolve around positivity, political correctness, body consciousness, self-confidence, spiritual awareness, intellectual prowess, mindfulness, oh the list goes on and on and on and on.

Recently I have been attending so many functions, ladies breakfasts, corporate lunches and dinners with some influential women and what occurred to me is that there is a huge market for motivational speakers.

Ladies from all corners of the country are standing up, while we are chomping on our health muesli, and telling us how we must dress, what we must eat, what colours to wear and even how many times we must have 'adult times' with our husbands.

Oh gosh! I am not very good at sitting back and allowing some strange Auntie tell me how to live my life. I should be the first one to jump out of my seat objecting, but I don't.

In most cases I stay in my seat and observe and wonder if I am the only one thinking, "This is bull dust!" And as I look around the room, I marvel, "Did we really pay R350 to listen to this Auntie tell us how to be self confident "

Motivational speaking is big business! But I have a feeling it has run its course most women who can afford these exorbitant breakfast expenses are hard working wives, daughters and mothers who do not want to be reminded about the importance of skin toning and exfoliation.

We do not want to be scared witless about what will happen once that cellulite starts showing and our husband's eyes start roaming. We do not want to be conned into believing that we will feel better after spending thousands on special limited offers for botox and fillers.

So what if our bras don't match the colour of our blouse Who cares that this particular colour jacket does not suit our rosy complexion Oh and while I am on a roll, I honestly do not want to know how many times you have sex with your husband and what you do in your bedroomI have issues, yes I do! But they are much bigger than your imagination dares to venture.

Damn it! I am just tired of living up to someone els's standards!

My bestie recently shared her horror with me. After a plush company breakfast, where some stylist offered to rearrange everyone's wardrobes and told the executives what styles were in for the season. This particular 'stylist' walked up to my bestie handed her a business card and said something like, "You should call me. I can help you."

My bestie was so incensed and hurt, she could not believe that this woman had such blatant audacity as to insinuate that there was something wrong with what she was wearing in the first place.

I often dish out a lot of advice and try to be motivational. It comes from a good place. When I call my kids, my first question to them is, "Are you happy " It's such a drive for me to be positive and happy and for everyone around me to feel this positivity vibe.

But as I go through life, I know that we can't always be happy and positive and that is okand I am ok with that. If you are out there and you are feeling crappyits ok, I'm feeling crappy too and its ok!

So if you are feeling crappy on this glorious November morning remember, we just need to calm ourselves down, take comfort from our friends and know that if we can't face the world today, our bed is a good place to hide until we feel ready.
