When Only The Best Will Do Mr. Shawarma opens in Umhlanga

Situated in the heart of the Umhlanga Village you will find a brand new venue, Mr Shawarma, a Middle Eastern Restaurantÿowned and run by a pair vibrant and colourful characters, Mario De Abreu and his partner John Staychev with his wonderfully creative wife Sarah. Together they have produced a highly recommended dining venue in the heart of Umhlanga, which has an amazing selection of exciting food items, served by an interesting array of local and international waitrons.

Speaking to John Staychev, at Mr. Shawarma last week, gave me some insight into their dream that is now becoming a reality, "It has always been a dream to serve this cuisine and share my love of this food with the South African public," said John.

At the heart of John's business is the need to provide his guests with authentic middle-eastern cuisine in a modern and upbeat atmosphere. He is completely focused on fresh, high-quality, chef-inspired food made from scratch, and it shows.

"We aspire to give our patrons an outstanding and authentic eating experience in a setting that is truly memorable. It is these fundamentals, along with our core values, that inspire us and sets us apart," said John. "We offer a traditionally authentic Shawarma, made from family recipes passed down through the generations of family cooks, we hope that through our friendly and interactive service model and generous portions at an exceptional value will appeal to the people of Umhlanga and surrounding area. We want to acknowledge each and every one of our guests and let them to know that in our restaurant they are truly outstanding, unique and special."

John has lived around the world and in his relatively short life, he has visited every continent on the planet, he has a sound understanding of business and has worked hard on creating a food concept, which he is planning to extend and develop.

The origins of shawarma are unknown however shawarma means "rotated" in Turkish, meaning that the food has been rotating around a source of fire while cooking. John who is originally from Russia, grew up in Israel where he developed a love for Mediterranean cuisine. He is now sharing his ancient recipes and his international food knowledge with the Umhlanga community.
