Through my eyes

I so wanted to rant and shout in my column this week tell you all about the guy who almost rode me over while jogging in BallitoI wanted to rage about how privilege has sunk its fangs so deeply into some people's conscience, allowing them not only to disobey the law but also gave some men in this country the perception that they can publically threaten women with physical violence and guess what They get away with it.

Some people have no idea and the driver of the White Pajero with NT registrations number who threatened to 'hammer the shit out of me' after not stopping at the stop street, I know where you live and I'm onto you. Because if you think it's ok to stop in the middle of the intersection and shout out violent threats at innocent joggers, who have the right of way, you are so seriously mistaken.

Oh, and if you are threatening complete strangers with physical violence in broad daylight, not to mention the fact that I am a women, what are you doing in your own backyard Who is getting their shit hammered out of them at your place

Our country is filled with privilege. Entitled individuals, people, who get their way, bullied their values (or lack of them) at their environment. We all know that 'special' someone, who oversteps the mark and yet we say nothing. The idiot who throws in a few 'K' words at the dinner table, assuming it's ok, while you struggle too swallow the starters and not choke.

The privilege is so deeply routed in certain individuals that it defies norms set by society and yet they are still walking around, living amongst us; bringing toxic energy to everything they do. They consume the world in a specific manner, hammering through anyone who stands in their way and challenges them.

So many people in our country believe they represent the intellectual and cultural vanguard, which they exude with their dominant status their privilege as natural and clearly visible for all to see. Some Nouveau riche individuals bought their privileged status and flaunt it like a robe, a power trip of the ego.

For their privilege is unconsciously considered both normative and normal meaning, the system should privilege them and the daily privileges they receive never register as special, it's all taken for granted.

Over the years I have come across many who belong to this "Boys Club", mostly private school educated men, that not only will not support a women, even from the same privileged background as they are, but will do everything in their power to block any business in their wide social, business networks. They live amongst us, I'm sure you know a few.

I so wanted not to rage and be angry, but it was bubbling out of me and I just could not help myself; Look there's nothing wrong with being privileged, if it is handled with humility and dignity. But accepting the benefits of that privilege and then stomping on everyone who gets in your way is sheer narcissism. Ignoring and refuting the existence of privilege helps to perpetuate these destructive social inequalities.

But recognition, clarity and openness about the different forms of privilege is the first step in tackling the unfair disparities and redressing the balance, threatening complete strangers with physical violence is not ok, ever! No matter how privileged you are
