Peugeot Enters Competitive South African Bakkie Market With Landtrek

After winning the SAGMJ Car-Of-The-Year in South Africa this year, Peugeot’s latest offering follows a lineage of respect, which is well deserved by this French carmaker. The Landtrek is Peugeot’s double cab bakkie, entering the brand into a tight market with some very steep competition.

That being said, the major thing that the Landtrek has going for it is its freshness, in a segment of the car market that has been hotly contested over the past few years. The Bakkie is virtually a symbol of South African culture at this stage, and Peugeot has decided to be part of it.

The Landtrek comes to us as a double-cab only, and will be available in two derivatives, either 4x4 or the 4x2 option. Sporting a host of quality-of-life features and a modern interior, both models come with a five year/100 000 km service plan with regular 10 000 km service intervals aimed at optimising reliability and reducing operating costs.

Peugeot is no newcomer to the pick up market in Africa. Having a proud lineage of bakkies dating all the way as far back as the 1930s, up until as recent as 2006, manufacturing the Peugeot 504 model in Kenya and Nigeria. In this sense, the Landtrek shouldn’t be viewed as the brand’s first stab at making this type of vehicle, but rather another model in a long line of Peugeots that are built with hard work and ruggedness in mind.

Driving comfort on the Landtrek is of a high quality, the car feels strong and capable in tough off road situations, and still manages to be comfortable to drive in on the highway. While it does come into the market with a very passable spec sheet, the car makes up for it with its fresh face and refined look.

There is much that can be said about the specific requirements of each individual; the Landtrek’s other features see it stack up well against its rivals in a few key areas. It has excellent space and capability to put a literal ton of things inside it and drive it places, or get it to tow up to three tons.

Other noteworthy elements of the Landtrek are the vehicle’s 360 degree camera system, that comes standard with the 4x4 model, it’s 10-inch infotainment screen, and a handy 12V power output in the bin of the Bakkie, which is very useful for camping and outdoor situations.

Overall, the Peugeot Landtrek offers good value for money, starting at R579 900.00 for the 4x2 and R669 900.00 for the 4x4 variant, what’s not to like about it?
